Abstract
The health and wellbeing of a student body is dependent upon the environment in which they exist. For any student, college life tends to be stressful. Whether it be academics, social, or anything else going on in their life, the experience can at times take a toll on a student’s overall wellbeing. The student population at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is no different. On campus, the spaces where students study, live, and attend classes can both impact their mood and reflect how they are currently feeling. That being said, one must ask the question, ‘does a space support mental well-being?’, when it comes to the areas of a college campus. The purpose of this thesis is to design a nuanced space with the intention of promoting student’s mental health. The project dissects both architecture and landscape architecture by attempting to weave them together and design a harmonious space. Considering society’s desire to be closer connected to nature, the space is an homage to the modern architectural style of biophilic design while simultaneously taking inspiration from healing gardens - resulting in a restorative landscape. Through this design, the student body will have a space where they can feel at ease, their worries can be alleviated by simply experiencing this space. This project may become symbolic of the future in design where designers are once again putting the human experience first, not utility.
