Abstract
The purpose of my project is to develop a software application which serves both as an interactive visual aid for understanding perspective drawing and as a tool for drafting accurately and quickly in perspective. The problem that inspired my research is that perspective is very difficult to visualize without a reliable mental model. You can know a good deal about perspective and still not really understand or be able to use it very well. Da Vinci, giving instructions on how to draw a site correctly in his 1270 Treatise on Painting, advised artists to place a sheet of glass in front of their eye and ‘draw on the glass what appears beyond it’. This sheet of glass represents an imaginary construct known as the ‘picture plane’. The software I will share uses augmented reality to map a virtual world onto the real world around you and draws the perspective view seen onto your phone’s screen – the picture plane. The software allows you to move and look around the virtual world and watch the perspective change on your phone’s screen in real time. You can use the software to clip a copy of any perspective view to a sheet of paper in mixed reality and draw what you see. In all, the software serves as an artist’s companion for perspective drawing.
