Effects of Air Pollution on Public Health
As human civilization progresses, we have failed to realize that in this process we are causing damage to our planet's air quality and sustainability. Only in recent times, witnessing the rise in health disorders, have we acknowledged the consequences of our actions. The World Health Organization report shows that air pollution is mainly due to emissions from transportation and the use of fossil fuels. The Pollutants with the strongest evidence for public health concern include particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2).Interestingly, this in turn also leads to climate change. This affects our lungs causing inflammation and worsening any pre-existing conditions like asthma. Hence there is an urgent need to reduce emissions and promote clean air initiatives towards protecting health. After years of neglect to our planet, our U.S. Congress passed the Clean Air Act of 1963. This was our first program in place to research ways to monitor and control air pollution. By reducing fossil fuel use in traditional vehicles or changing to clean electric vehicles we can reduce pollution. Hence, the objective of my research is to study the effect of air pollution on human health, especially respiratory. This study proposes that by transitioning to clean energy in all sectors and eco-friendly transportation we can reduce air pollution thereby protecting human and environmental health.
