Abstract

My thesis explores self-portraiture as a means of expression and introspection in both traditional art and graphic design. By conducting a series of creative experiments, I am analyzing how principles of form, texture, and spatial manipulation can be used across artistic forms.

Artists use a variety of mediums to represent and interpret their identities. In this work, I am exploring the visual languages and techniques employed in traditional self-portraiture, such as sculpture and painting, and how these traditions intersect with the digital realm of graphic design. I discovered that the skills and principles underlying both mediums, such as form, symbolism, abstraction, and communication, are their fundamentals. I have also uncovered that metaphor and abstraction are commonly used as tools to express a variety of things within Graphic Design and Art. In my work, I use my connection to cats as a metaphor and reflection of myself.

Furthermore, this thesis examines the concept of identity in the context of representation in multiple forms. This exploration uncovers that people portray themselves and their identity in many ways, whether literal or symbolic, through sculpture or a website. Graphic Design and Art are forms of creative expression that a person can use to communicate, reflect, and understand a variety of ideas, messages, and subjects.
