Abstract

This study investigates the impact of travel on team performance in the NBA and NFL over the last five years, addressing variables such as travel distance, direction, sequence, and time zones crossed. By leveraging extensive box scores and existing research, the research aims to quantify the true influence of travel on team success, measuring parameters like point spread and team totals in both leagues.

While existing literature often concentrates on specific aspects of travel in either the NBA or NFL, this study provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis, bridging gaps in comparative research. The general hypothesis is that both travel distance and time zones crossed negatively affect team performance in both leagues, with the direction of travel having limited impact. Teams traveling from an away game to another away game are expected to be most affected.

Methodologically, the study collects five years of basketball and football data, organizes it systematically, and employs Python coding platforms for in-depth analysis. Focusing on team success measured by point spread and team total, the study aims to contribute nuanced insights into the intricate relationship between travel and team success in professional sports.
