ABSTRACT

Trails have an undeniable appeal for an Assisted Living Community that has access to open and forested spaces. At the start, these trails are created with much enthusiasm. As time goes by and the project's trailblazer has left the scene, the new management has simply never been shown how to properly care for the forest, and it starts to show signs of neglect. Signs of a neglected forest trail can include invasive plants, erosion, exposed roots or dead and diseased trees just waiting to fall on the trail. The forest itself must be taken care of and that will require a multi-step Management Plan. The first step is to document problem areas near the trails in a systematic way in order to identify priorities. After the specific areas have been identified the next step is to use natural methods such as mulching the trees into wood chips to control erosion. Periodic updates of management priorities while continuing trail improvements will insure successful implementation of this Trail Management Plan.
