The Cause and Effects of Plastic Waste on the Environment
Plastics have transformed everyday life, increasing the annual production of plastic by 400 million tons since the 1950s. However, the alarming rise in plastic waste in recent years raises a major concern over the health and sustainability of the modern world. Although plastic brings many benefits, the need to accommodate a rapidly growing population and poorly regulated plastic manufacturing has created a world overly dependent on plastic. This is a cause for concern as much of this plastic becomes waste that pollutes oceans, destroys key ecosystems, and harms wildlife that affects the rest of the world. Additionally, a common byproduct of plastic, known as microplastics, has been linked to increasing the risk of birth defects and cancer. Furthermore, the waste systems responsible for disposing of plastic only exacerbate the issue as plastic waste in landfills can seep into the surrounding environment, poisoning nearby rivers and land. However, there are possible measures to combat plastic waste. In an effort to identify solutions to plastic waste and create a healthier environment, this paper explores the different factors that led to the rise in plastic waste. Using a collection of databases and research articles, this paper seeks to shed light on the effects of plastic waste on the environment and global population over the last 70 years.
