Abstract
Sexual Violence (SV) is a major health crisis that has been heavily studied for multiple decades. While SV literature has based the data on theoretical models focusing on individual risk factors, more recent work has aimed to broaden this approach by integrating the relevance of social-contextual risk factors that are ever-present in patriarchal societies and sexual violence perpetration by heterosexual/cisgender men (Eagan, 2021). One of these factors includes how alcohol use and SV are heavily tied to one another (Abbey, 2002, 2011; Gervais et al., 2014). Additionally, for college students, perceived male peer support for enacting SV is significantly associated with reported SV perpetration (De Keseredy & Kelly, 1995; Humphrey & Kahn, 2000). This project examines data from Dr. Eagan’s dissertation, where we aim to understand the connection between witnessing peers/friends’ perpetration of SV and men’s own reporting of perpetrating acts of SV, through the influence of men’s drinking motivations (conforming, enhancing the mood, socializing, and coping). We predicted that, for men who had witnessed a peer/friend perpetrated SV, those who also reported committing SV behaviors would report motivation for their drinking behavior to include conforming, enhancing the mood, socializing, and coping. This work can help to further disentangle the complex connection we see between SV perpetration and alcohol.
