Effects of ADHD Medications on Children and Alternative Treatments
Methods: Online databases including CINAHL, PubMed, and Nursing and Allied Health were used to discover relevant research on alternative treatment options being used within the last ten years.
Results: Despite the convenience of daily medication, alternative treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy, regular exercise, and diet changes have better outcomes to optimize the quality of life in pediatric patients with an ADHD diagnosis. Alternative treatments, while having fewer side effects, may not always be used due to family finances and resource constraints.
Conclusion: American children with an ADHD diagnosis may be treated based on convenience rather than their best interest. Therapies other than medication therapy are available and feasible, yet not used as often due to family resource limitations. Further research is needed.
