Abstract

This research project investigates the courtroom journey of individuals with a neurodivergent status, focusing particularly on the access and support to and within the legal system. Neurodiversity generally refers to variations in neurological structure and function that are inherent and often present from birth, contributing to differences in cognitive processing, perception, and behavior. Neurodiversity is a concept that recognizes the natural variation in human neurological characteristics and functioning. It acknowledges that individuals have diverse ways of processing information, learning, and experiencing the world, which can be influenced by factors such as genetics, brain structure, an neurodevelopmental conditions. This research will also observe neurodiversity onset by substance abuse and trauma from violence.

My observations at the Greenfield Court Service center have exposed disparities in access for neurodivergent court users. Consequently, this project aims to uncover common experiences and challenges related to courtroom accessibility for this demographic. By conducting a comprehensive review of relevant literature and engaging in interviews with court officials such as housing tenancy experts, parole chiefs, potentially former family/probate court judges, and mental health experts I aim to illuminate existing support structures and suggest improvements.

I am optimistic that this research could catalyze positive transformations within the legal framework, advancing inclusivity and accessibility for individuals, irrespective of their neurodivergent characteristics.
