Abstract

This research addresses the pressing issue of declining pass rates for Advanced Placement (AP) exams in Worcester Public Schools (WPS), particularly among Black and Latinx students, despite a significant increase in AP program participation. To delve into the social psychological impact of failing these exams, we employ a comprehensive multimethod approach combining surveys and in-depth interviews. By focusing on the experiences of students who have faced the challenge of not passing AP exams, we aim to shed light on the social psychological consequences of failing on the student identity. Survey data on students' self-reported confidence and motivation regarding their AP exam scores and experiences are discussed with additional analysis of race and gender. Given academic disparities that already exist within WPS populations, especially among Black and Latinx students, our findings have the potential to help guide early-credit opportunities for students going forward in a manner that simultaneously maintains the standards of college credit in high school, while preventing potentially life-changing implications of failing a standardized exam.
