Abstract

Over both the spring and fall semesters of 2023, I have spent countless hours of reading, researching and writing dedicated to the completion of this thesis project. As a nursing student, I made the decision that it would be more challenging and beneficial to round out my experience as a student at Fitchburg State as I approach graduation in May 2024. By reading poetry anthologies similar to the one I was hoping to create and researching the techniques and regulations related to writing poetry. I utilized all of the techniques that I found in these sources to create a unique text, completely unlike anything I had ever written before. Writing about both personal experiences and stories that have been shared with me throughout my life brought about a lot of emotions, which was often an uncomfortable experience. However, these experiences were necessary for me because the emotions I was experiencing were exactly the emotions I was hoping to provoke in my readers. A majority of my time working on this project was dedicated to writing the anthology and then editing (and usually completely rewriting each piece) to ensure that the poems would sound as good out loud as they did in my head. After completing the anthology, I then completed the thesis project with hours dedicated to writing my final thesis. My goal is to share my journey away from the typical research projects I have done in the nursing program, and how emotional and challenging the journey really was.
