Abstract

The purpose of my thesis was to explore the actor’s process through a directorial lens. As such, it was only natural that my theoretical research would have a practical application in the form of a short film. This thesis report delves into the many steps undertaken throughout the course of two semesters. With the aim of comprehensively grasping the nuances of acting, my first semester consisted of rigorous study and collaboration with Professor Dermer. As pre-production unfolded the script was selected, the writer was consulted, and the crew formed. The chosen script was titled ‘I Am Myself Alone’ and follows two women as they compete at auditions for a Shakespearian play. This script was a perfect fit for my thesis due to the many unique intricacies posed by the acting; the Shakespearian dialogue, the stage fight it included, and the interesting concept of making a film about auditions as if it were a play. This would require the actors to delicately toe the line between acting for screen and for stage. During summer preparations, extensive research into Westerns and stage combat informed the creative vision. Simultaneously, logistical aspects such as fundraising and location management underscored the practical requisites of filmmaking. As I entered the second semester of my thesis, the production underwent auditions, casting, and over thirty hours of rehearsals. Finally it was time for the production to begin, followed by months of post-production. The conclusion of this report reflects on the attainment of the thesis goal and the profound insights I gained about acting throughout the filmmaking process.
