- Abstract
- The main role of the insulin receptor is to facilitate the cellular uptake of glucose in response to insulin binding. Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by the pancreas. Another peptide hormone, Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) which is primarily produced in liver can also interact with the insulin receptor. Here, we will use the 3D virtual reality application, Nanome, to visually explore the interface landscape of both peptide hormones with the insulin receptor, taking special note of the noncovalent interactions that create the interface. By using virtual reality technology, students can experience the volume of proteins and their interactions. Use of this technology can deepen student understanding of biomolecular processes.
