Communities Creating Climate Solutions for a Healthy Planet and Healthy People
Outcomes of grand climate action plans on a global scale are not clearly observed yet however data from urban communities indicate successful outcomes. Hence the objective of my research is to see how small climate practices within Ecovillages can play a favorable role in the current climate crisis. The three climate action goals discussed here are air quality, urban planning, and food systems. I hypothesize that because Ecovillages efficiently plan these 3 goals they live in a way that has minimal impact on the environment. I explored this link between climate action and health through a scientific literature review and ecovillage case studies from Germany. They achieve environment and human health by improving air quality, creating green buildings for better managing ecosystems to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and planting fruits and vegetables to help increase the quality of our health. A transition to clean renewable energy sources are also considered vital to lower carbon emissions and reduce air pollution. In conclusion, by following the environmentally friendly practices of Ecovillages, promoting plant-based diets, enhancing accessibility to healthy food, and prioritizing clean energy sources alongside efficient urban planning and transportation policies, we can collectively work towards achieving the United Nations' net zero goals by 2050 while simultaneously improving both environmental sustainability and public health outcomes.
