Abstract

The South Asian diaspora is a multifaceted and complex cultural tapestry, comprising a rich mosaic of traditions, languages, and identities that mirrors the diverse histories and experiences of individuals migrating from the Indian subcontinent to various corners of the world, concurrently contributing dynamically to global culture while embodying diverse traditions and identities. The study explores the evolution of the South Asian community in America from the early 1900s to the present, delving into cross-generational identity development and examining key events, including community establishment, immigration patterns, and pivotal socio-political moments shaping the South Asian experience in the United States. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, it draws from sociology, cultural studies, various literary works, etc. to explore factors influencing identity formation and examines the ways in which individuals negotiate their identities while straddling the diverse cultural landscapes of both America and their countries of origin. The research uncovers challenges faced by the South Asian diaspora in America, spanning assimilation, acculturation, and cultural heritage preservation, identifying tensions between embracing the host culture and safeguarding South Asian heritage while considering generational shifts in shaping identity dynamics. Exploring transnationalism, the study emphasizes interconnectedness between South Asians in America and their homelands, exploring various factors in negotiating identity across geographical borders such as cultural preservation, cultural hybridity, and more. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the South Asian diaspora experience in America, shedding light on the complexities of identity formation across generations while seeking to inform discussions on the broader themes of multiculturalism and diversity in society.
