Understanding Family Child Care Providers' Knowledge and Practices Relating to Children’s 24-Hour Movement Behaviors
Background: Childcare settings influence the cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development of children. Although center-based childcare knowledge and practices have been linked to children’s 24-hour movement behaviors (sedentary time, physical activity [PA], and sleep), less is known about the family childcare setting.
Purpose: To examine knowledge and practices regarding children’s 24-hour behaviors in family/home-based childcare providers.
Methods: Cross-sectional data from home childcare providers in Western Massachusetts was collected through an online Qualtrics survey. The final variables will include information about childcare programs, socio-demographic factors, child sleep knowledge, child PA knowledge, screen time practices, PA practices, and nap sleep practices.
Planned Analyses: We will finalize the sample size then descriptive statistics will be calculated to describe the characteristics of our sample through the open text responses. To assess differences between various sample groups, such as race/ethnicity, we will employ t-tests and one-way ANOVA tests, providing us with statistical insights into the significance of these distinctions. We will conduct correlation analyses to uncover potential associations between different variables, shedding light on the relationships that may exist within our dataset. The data collection phase of this study is now complete, and the data is being processed for the planned analyses.
Implications: The findings from this study will potentially identify areas of need and serve as a foundation for the development of an evidence-based, tailored intervention to promote healthy 24-hour behaviors of children in home childcare settings.
