Community Engagement in Amherst, Massachusetts: Connecting the Generations through a Tech Support Program
Ensuring that seniors in our communities stay ahead of technological advancements is important for promoting their independence and enhancing their overall quality of life. Maintaining communication with family, staying informed about current events, and pursuing personal interests are especially vital for the well-being of older adults. However, a widening generation gap poses a challenge, as some elders may feel uneasy adopting newer, constantly evolving technologies. Addressing this issue requires a concerted effort to ensure that seniors are equipped with the skills needed to navigate the digital landscape. This semester, I plan to collaborate with Amherst High School's Tech Club to organize an 'Elder Tech Day'. My plan includes obtaining comprehensive training from Cyber-Seniors to effectively educate older adults on technology use, preparing an instructive slideshow for Tech Club students, designing an editable flyer to promote the event, crafting surveys for both students and elders, and participate in the Elder Tech Day event. Additionally throughout the semester, I will volunteer with Cyber-Seniors and participate in workshops aimed at providing older adults with a deeper understanding of relevant technologies. This civic engagement project seeks not only to empower elders in our local community with technological skills but to also bridge the generation gap. By fostering understanding and collaboration between different age groups, we hope to create a more connected and inclusive community.
