- Abstract
- Food security is a basic human right vital for survival which affects us both mentally, and physically. It refers to physical and economic access to nutritious food. Physical access to food is going to the store, growing stocks, and the ability to trade. Economics would be national or international access to food supply. Unfortunately, there are many places around the world that suffer from food security, this can be because of limited access to national or international, insufficient funds, and natural disasters. The objective of this research is to understand food security in the USA and propose innovative solutions. This research is based on US government websites and scientific articles. In the USA the extent of food insecurity varies among different communities and regions. Even though there is abundant food not all communities especially minorities and low income households do not have equal access to nutritious food, referred to as food deserts. Our government addresses this by food assistance programs such as school lunch programs, the women, infants, and children program, and the supplemental nutrition assistance program. We have to adopt efficient agricultural practices, enhance infrastructure and reduce food waste. Some innovative solutions to address food deserts are vertical farming and aquaponics that efficiently utilizes space and resources with minimal environmental impact but localizes food production and availability. We should also consider reducing food waste and embrace alternate protein sources such as insect farming or cultured meat to address food security.
