Abstract
The purpose of this study is to survey the influence of training status on mood. Research has shown that regular exercise can favorably influence mood, but it is not clear if there is a threshold whereby too much exercise can negatively affect mood. To explore this question, the present study will conduct a cross-sectional survey of the undergraduate day-student population at Salem State University. Given the limited research in the area, we will adopt the null hypothesis that there will be no relation between training status and mood. Participants will primarily be recruited by word-of-mouth. Survey responses will be anonymous, and no personal identifiers will be collected. We will aim for a sample size of 358 students. The main tool that will be used to measure mood will be the validated Brunel Mood Scale. The Borg RPE scale will be the main tool used to measure exercise intensity. These tools will be implemented into the survey using SurveyMonkey. Data will be analyzed using SurveyMonkey’s result-analysis features such as ‘filter’, ‘compare’, and ‘show’. These features will present clear relationships between the data (if there are any). We are moving toward data collection, with data processing and analysis expected by late March, followed by presentation of tentative results in mid-April.
